My husband and I are really adventurous when it comes to food, and we like to enjoy a variety of cuisines. I like to think of it as a “cheapie traveling tours” in eating our way around the world. Right now, we are taking a tour to Greece and it’s actually on our list of places to visit. Someday we will visit Athens and see the Parthenon and from the movies (like My Life in Ruins)…it looks absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking. Someday we’ll visit but for now we can enjoy the wonderful savory dishes of Greece.
Whenever I think of Greek food, Cat Cora always immediately comes to my mind frame. She’s one incredible Southern-Greek chef that I adore and have met in real life. (Love her – she is a sweetheart!) This Greek-inspired recipe definitely caught my eye, and I have had it saved since last September. I’m kicking myself in the booty that I saved it for that long because this dish is truly spectacular. Eric and I instantly fell in love with the Mediterranean flavors and instantly drifted away to the turquoise waters of Greece. This isn’t your average burger but filled with a beautiful blend of Greek flavors and this will definitely be a mainstay in our go-to recipes for those “cheapie traveling tours” kind of days.
Greek Burger Gyros with Garlic Sauce & Mixed Greens
Adapted from Cat Cora
⅓ cup Kalamata olive, finely chopped
1 tablespoon green onions, finely chopped
1 teaspoon dried dill weed
1 teaspoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon fresh oregano, chopped
2 tablespoon crumbled feta
3 tablespoons seasoned dry breadcrumbs
1 pound lean ground beef or lamb
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Mini brioche buns, split/toasted or hot dog buns (cut in half)
Mixed greens or microgreens, for garnish
¼ cup plain Greek yogurt or mayonnaise
1 clove garlic, minced
In a large bowl, mix the egg with a fork until light and fluffy. Mix in the onions, green onions, dill weed, oregano, breadcrumbs, feta, salt and pepper. Mix until combined.
Add in the ground beef/lamb. Using your fingers or fork, mix thoroughly to combine with the Greek mixture. Form the mixture into abut 12 golf size patties, abut ½ inch thick.
In a large skillet pan (with grill marks if you can) heat the pan over medium-high heat. Add the extra-virgin olive oil.
In small batches, place the burgers on the pan and cook for 3 minutes on each side or until fully cooked.
Prepare the garlic sauce. In a small bowl, combine the yogurt with the garlic and mix until fully combined. Season with salt, to taste.
Assemble the burgers, place a burger on the bottom half of the bun. Top with mixed greens, a spoonful of chopped kalamata olives & feta cheese (optional), and drizzle the garlic yogurt sauce on the other half of the bun.
Review: Make this burger ASAP and you won’t regret it. It was a nice and juicy burger and the creamy garlic sauce complemented the distinctive Greek burger. You can easily substitute ground turkey instead of ground beef/lamb if you’re watching calories, too.
